After growing speculation that Emre Can will be leaving in the summer on a free and the everlasting criticism towards our captain Jordan Henderson, What exactly is Liverpool missing from midfield to take us to the next level.
The big one that stands out to me is class, they are steady premier league players but they most likely wouldn’t be in the starting line-up of another top 4 team. The top 4 teams have at least one or two world-class players in midfield such as De Bruyne, Matic and Fabregas.
One thing that I feel Henderson and Can are missing is Finesse. The ability to hold the ball and set the play up with through balls, passes through defenders is slightly limited. It is required of our forwards to drop into space to create the chances however we are then limited in numbers going forward against the sides the drop back.
It seems to be a common occurrence when we write anything about Liverpool but the single biggest thing we lack in midfield is defensive awareness and pace.
To often it’s a lapse in concentration by our midfield that leads to continuous pressure on our defenders and goals being conceded.
With limited pace from our more defensive midfielders there are often on the back foot in a turnover and unable to make ground.
Moving Forward –
The most exciting thought moving forward is the acquisition of Naby Kieta who will slot straight into midfield. He is an instant upgrade on all out CM’s and will provide more defensively and going forward.
Lallana is the other player that is loved by Klopp and should play to provide the spark offensively in midfield.
As we would have an attacking midfielder and a box to box midfielder I think the best option is to buy a specialist defensive midfielder. The player I think that would suit us the most is Fabinho from AS Monaco. He is 189 cm, 24 years old and can play as DM as well as RB. He has attacking capabilities as well however the attraction is his tackling, concentration and positioning defensively.
